Airport guide

Phu Bai International Airport

Phu Bai International Airport is the main air gateway to Huế. Terminal T2 has been the airport's operating passenger terminal since 28 April 2023 and was formally inaugurated on 17 June 2023. ACV gives T2 about 22,380 m² of floor area and design capacity of 5 million passengers per year, including 4 million domestic and 1 million international passengers. The current runway remains about 2,700 m × 45 m. In August 2026, the Ministry of Construction was seeking comments on a new detailed airport plan that proposes ICAO Code 4E, extension of the existing runway to 3,600 m × 45 m and at least 11 aircraft stands for the 2021–2030 period. The same proposal looks toward a second 3,200 m runway, a new Terminal T3 and total passenger capacity of 12 million per year by 2050. Those future works remain planning proposals until formally approved and implemented.

HUI
Overview

Understand the airport as a journey, a gateway and a regional transport system.

Phu Bai International Airport serves Huế's heritage city, tourism economy, administration, services and southern development corridor. Its current passenger experience is centred on Terminal T2, which ACV brought into official operation on 28 April 2023 before its formal inauguration on 17 June 2023. The terminal combines modern processing facilities with design references to Huế's royal architectural heritage. T2 has about 22,380 m² of floor area, design capacity of 5 million passengers per year and four passenger boarding-bridge systems: three for Code C aircraft and one dual bridge capable of serving one Code E aircraft or two Code C aircraft. The airport's current runway is still about 2,700 m × 45 m. A detailed planning dossier under consultation in August 2026 proposes a much larger future airport, but its 3,600 m runway, second runway, T3 and 12-million-passenger scale are not current operating assets.

Why it matters

Read the airport as a system, not just a terminal

Strategic role

Phu Bai is the air front door to Vietnam's imperial heritage city and a key part of Huế's tourism, services and investment infrastructure.

What makes it distinctive

Terminal T2 translates Huế's royal architectural language into a contemporary transport building rather than using a generic airport identity.

What users often miss

The modern T2 is current infrastructure, while the Code 4E airfield, extended runway, second runway and T3 belong to a new 2026 planning proposal.

In one sentence

Phu Bai is Huế's operating international airport with a modern 5-million-passenger T2 and a 2.7 km runway; a much larger Code 4E, two-runway T2+T3 airport is proposed for the future.

Airport identity

Investor checklist

  • Use phu-bai-international-airport consistently for standalone id, slug and Province Profile entityRef.
  • Use hue as provinceSlug.
  • Use about 2,700 m × 45 m for the current runway.
  • Use 5 million passengers/year for T2 design capacity.
  • Treat T2 as the current operating passenger terminal.
  • Treat the 3,600 m runway extension as proposed under the August 2026 planning dossier.
  • Treat T3 and the second runway as 2050 proposals.
  • Use 12 million passengers/year only for the proposed 2050 scale.
  • Do not use older future-planning figures as the current baseline without identifying their planning vintage.
  • Verify live international routes before using them in investment or tourism analysis.
Business and investment

Use the airport as a regional decision-making lens

Business travel

Strengths
  • Close to central Huế
  • Modern T2
  • Direct nonstop links with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City
  • International-capable passenger terminal
  • Strategic position near southern Huế industrial development
Limitations
  • Smaller route network than Da Nang
  • Scheduled international connectivity remains developing
  • Major Code 4E airfield expansion is still planning-stage
Decision Rule
Phu Bai is the natural airport for business in Huế when a suitable direct flight exists; Da Nang can be a practical alternative for a broader international network.

Air vs road vs rail vs sea

Air
Fastest option for long-distance domestic travel when direct flights are available.
Rail
Huế station provides central access on the North–South Railway and can be attractive for regional or overnight journeys.
Road
National Highway 1 and expressway links connect Huế with Đà Nẵng and other central destinations.
Sea
Chân Mây serves maritime and cruise functions rather than replacing passenger aviation.
Decision Rule
Air is strongest for long-distance speed; rail and road can be competitive for central-region journeys.
