Province

Dong Thap

The current Đồng Tháp province was formed in 2025 by merging the former Đồng Tháp and Tiền Giang provinces. It covers 5,938.64 km², has an official post-merger population baseline of 4,370,046 and operates 102 commune-level units—82 communes and 20 wards. The political-administrative centre was placed in the former Tiền Giang area. The merger created an unusually complete Mekong Delta transect: from the Cambodia-facing upper Mekong and Đồng Tháp Mười floodplain through Tràm Chim, Gò Tháp, Cao Lãnh and Sa Đéc, then along the Tiền River to Cái Bè, Mỹ Tho, orchard islands, Gò Công and the East Sea. VietnamWaving therefore frames Đồng Tháp through a border–wetland–river–orchard–sea identity; lotus remains a powerful symbol without erasing the former Tiền Giang territory's river, orchard, urban and coastal identities.

Potential advantages
  • The merged province stretches continuously from the Cambodia frontier to the East Sea
  • Mỹ Tho and Cao Lãnh provide complementary urban-service poles
  • Major expressways and Tiền River bridges provide strong access to Hồ Chí Minh City and the wider delta
  • The Tiền River and Chợ Gạo Canal provide major inland-waterway logistics capacity
  • Mango, durian, flowers, rice, lotus and pineapple support diversified high-value agriculture
  • Gò Công adds coastal aquaculture and marine-economy opportunities absent from old Đồng Tháp
  • Tràm Chim, Gò Tháp, Sa Đéc, Cái Bè, Mỹ Tho, Thới Sơn and Gò Công create a deep multi-day tourism portfolio
Due diligence
  • The enlarged province contains very different floodplain, freshwater, orchard, urban and coastal systems
  • Climate risks include Mekong-flow change, flood extremes, riverbank erosion, drought, salinity intrusion and coastal erosion
  • Tràm Chim and other wetlands require conservation-first tourism and hydrological management
  • Fruit exports depend on market access, phytosanitary standards, water reliability and cold-chain logistics
  • Coastal projects must not be treated as operating merely because they appear in planning documents
  • Cái Bè's floating-market identity has changed and should not be presented using outdated guaranteed-market imagery
  • Former Tiền Giang destinations must be integrated as equal parts of the new provincial identity
