Airport guide

Vinh International Airport

Vinh International Airport is Nghệ An's operating aviation gateway and an important airport for north-central Vietnam. It reopened on 19 December 2025 after a major upgrade programme covering the existing runway and taxiways, aircraft apron and domestic Terminal T1. The upgraded T1 can handle roughly 3–3.5 million passengers per year, while the apron provides nine Code C stands. The existing runway remains 2,400 m × 45 m after rehabilitation. Separate long-term planning approved in 2025 calls for extending that runway to 3,000 m, developing Terminal T2 and reaching about 8 million passengers per year by 2030 and 14 million by 2050. These future facilities and capacities must not be presented as already operating.

VII
Overview

Understand the airport as a journey, a gateway and a regional transport system.

Vinh International Airport serves Vinh, Nghệ An and a wider north-central catchment. The airport temporarily suspended flights from 1 July 2025 for a coordinated infrastructure upgrade and returned to operation on 19 December 2025. The completed works rehabilitated the 2,400 m runway and taxiways, improved drainage, lighting and aviation systems, expanded the aircraft apron to nine Code C positions and renovated and enlarged Terminal T1. Current reporting after reopening places T1 capacity at roughly 3–3.5 million passengers per year. This completed upgrade is distinct from the airport master plan approved by Decision 201/QĐ-BGTVT on 19 February 2025. That plan targets ICAO Code 4E, approximately 8 million passengers and 25,000 tonnes of cargo annually in the 2021–2030 period, including extension of the existing runway to 3,000 m and development of a new T2 terminal. By 2050, the plan envisages approximately 14 million passengers, 35,000 tonnes of cargo, a second 3,000 m runway and a much larger T2 apron. VietnamWaving therefore distinguishes three layers clearly: today's reopened airport, the planned 2030 expansion, and the 2050 vision.

Key things to understand

  • Vinh International Airport reopened on 19 December 2025 after a comprehensive upgrade.
  • The completed 2025 works rehabilitated the existing runway and taxiways, expanded the apron and upgraded Terminal T1.
  • The existing operating runway remains 2,400 m × 45 m; the planned 3,000 m runway is a future extension.
  • The upgraded T1 is reported at roughly 3–3.5 million passengers per year.
  • The expanded apron provides nine Code C aircraft stands.
  • The airport's 2025 master plan targets Code 4E and about 8 million passengers per year by 2030.
  • The 2030 plan includes extending the existing runway to 3,000 m × 45 m and developing Terminal T2.
  • The 2050 vision reaches about 14 million passengers and 35,000 tonnes of cargo per year.
  • A second 3,000 m × 45 m runway is planned for the 2050 horizon.
  • The airport anchors air access to Vinh, Cửa Lò, Nam Đàn and the wider Nghệ An economy.
Why it matters

Read the airport as a system, not just a terminal

Strategic role

Vinh Airport gives Nghệ An and a large north-central population direct long-distance air access while supporting tourism, manufacturing, services and investment.

What makes it distinctive

Its current story is unusually clear: a major 2025 rehabilitation has already been completed, while a much larger Code 4E airport with T2 and longer runways remains in the planning pipeline.

What users often miss

The airport reopened in December 2025, but the completed rehabilitation did not yet create the full 8-million-passenger 2030 airport.

In one sentence

Vinh is Nghệ An's operating airport: its runway and T1 were upgraded in 2025, while a future 3 km runway, T2 and 8-million-passenger 2030 configuration remain planned.

Investor checklist

  • Use 19 December 2025 as the airport's reopening milestone after the major upgrade.
  • Treat the current runway as 2,400 m × 45 m.
  • Treat the 3,000 m runway as a planned extension under the master plan.
  • Treat current T1 capacity as approximately 3–3.5 million passengers/year.
  • Do not present T2 as completed.
  • Use 8 million passengers/year for the 2030 master-plan scale.
  • Use 14 million passengers/year for the 2050 and current long-term national planning scale.
  • Verify international routes before describing them as operating.
  • Assess the airport together with expressway, railway and Cửa Lò port connectivity.
Business and investment

Use the airport as a regional decision-making lens

Business travel

Strengths
  • Direct access to Vinh and eastern Nghệ An
  • Reopened and modernised T1
  • Nine Code C stands after the 2025 apron expansion
  • Strong integration with road and rail corridors
  • Large long-term expansion plan
Limitations
  • Current runway remains shorter than the planned 3,000 m configuration
  • Route breadth remains below Vietnam's largest hubs
  • T2 and full Code 4E master-plan infrastructure remain future projects
Decision Rule
Vinh is the natural air gateway for most business travel to Nghệ An when a suitable direct flight is available.

Air vs road vs rail vs sea

Air
Best suited to long-distance passenger travel where direct flights are available.
Rail
Vinh station on the North–South Railway offers central intercity access and overnight travel options.
Road
The North–South Expressway and National Highway 1 provide strong links to Thanh Hóa, Hà Tĩnh, Hanoi and other regional destinations.
Sea
Cửa Lò port serves maritime freight rather than passenger air-travel functions.
Westward Road
National Highway 7 remains crucial for travel toward Con Cuông, Tương Dương, Kỳ Sơn and Laos.
Decision Rule
Air has a passenger-speed advantage over long distances; road and rail remain highly competitive for regional trips and freight.
