Overview

Understand the place through history, meaning, architecture and surviving evidence.

Trang An Landscape Complex is Viet Nam's only mixed cultural and natural World Heritage property, combining an exceptional humid tropical tower-karst landscape with archaeological evidence of human adaptation spanning more than 30,000 years. Its valleys, limestone towers, caves and subterranean waterways preserve both geomorphological processes and a long record of people responding to major environmental change. The historical layer continues through Hoa Lu, the 10th- and 11th-century capital. The World Heritage map uses one marker for the UNESCO property. Boat routes, caves, temples, Hoa Lu and other individual destinations remain discoverable as separate places without duplicating the World Heritage identity.

Key things to understand

  • UNESCO inscribed Trang An in 2014 under one cultural criterion and two natural criteria. A minor boundary modification was approved in 2016.
  • Caves at different elevations contain archaeological evidence showing how people occupied and adapted to this landscape across dramatic climatic and sea-level changes.
  • Trang An is an outstanding humid tropical tower-karst landscape with steep limestone cones and towers separated by enclosed depressions.
  • The archaeological story does not end in prehistory. Hoa Lu was established here as the capital of Viet Nam in the 10th and 11th centuries.
  • Much of the property remains in a natural or lightly inhabited condition, while inhabited valleys and agricultural land contribute to the continuing cultural landscape.
  • UNESCO management priorities include visitor management, archaeological research and conservation, monitoring and stronger community benefits.
  • Do not treat Trang An only as scenic boat tourism. Its World Heritage significance comes from the interaction between karst evolution and a remarkably long human record.
